Surcharging with PayJunction
Getting Started with Surcharging
- Read the details for surcharging and learn how to enable surcharging on PayJunction
- Let PayJunction know you want to enable surcharging and what your target start date is. If you’re new to PayJunction, let your sales rep know. If you’re already processing with PayJunction, reach out to Support at support@payjunction.com, or 800-601-0230 x 3.
- PayJunction will guide you through the rules, the regulations, and how to be compliant. Here are some key things to expect:
- Notify Mastercard 30 days prior to surcharging by filling out this form and sending it to Mastercard. This is a requirement and PayJunction cannot enable surcharging until it has been fulfilled.
- PayJunction will check to see if you would benefit from surcharging. Factors like your current rate structure, which state your business operates in, and whether you process mostly debit transactions will determine if surcharging benefits your business.
- Existing PayJunction customers must sign a Surcharging Amendment to their PayJunction Merchant Agreement.
- Clearly disclose the Surcharge at the point of entry, at the point of sale, and on receipts.
Surcharge Basics
- By law, surcharging is only allowed for credit card transactions.
- The surcharge must be equal to, or less than, the average percentage rate that the merchant pays per transaction, not to exceed a maximum of 3%.
- Businesses MUST clearly disclose the Surcharge at the point of entry, at the point of sale, and on receipts.
- Surcharging laws vary by state: some have no laws prohibiting surcharging, whereas others ban or restrict businesses from surcharging. PayJunction will be able to guide you for your specific jurisdiction.
